Minimum Order Quantities (MOQs) Explained
A minimum order quantity (MOQ) is the smallest quantity a supplier is willing to produce or sell in a single order, generally set to cover the fixed costs of tooling, material minimums or production line setup. MOQs vary widely by product and factory, and are often negotiable, particularly for a buyer with growth potential or a willingness to pay a per-unit premium.
Why MOQs exist
Manufacturers incur fixed costs before producing a single unit, machine setup, dyeing or material minimums, mould amortisation for injection-moulded parts. A low order volume can mean these fixed costs aren't recovered at a workable unit price, so the factory sets a floor.
MOQs tend to be higher for products with custom tooling (injection moulding, custom packaging print runs) and lower for products assembled from largely standard components.
How MOQs are negotiated
Suppliers will sometimes reduce an MOQ in exchange for a higher unit price, a larger deposit, or a commitment to future volume. It's reasonable to ask directly what drives the stated MOQ (tooling, materials, or line time) since that shapes what kind of trade-off is realistic.
Combining several smaller SKUs into a single production run, or using a supplier's existing mould or standard colourway rather than a fully custom one, can also bring the effective MOQ down.
Managing a small order volume
If your required volume genuinely sits below what any suitable factory will produce, options include ordering from stock/existing designs rather than customising, using a trading company that consolidates smaller orders across multiple buyers, or accepting a higher unit cost for a first order to establish the relationship before volume grows.
Be cautious of suppliers who claim 'no MOQ' for a fully custom product, it often means the true minimum is being absorbed into an inflated unit price rather than genuinely waived.
